We are a dyeing shop called “Some-sho Yoshino-ya” that has been in business since the first year of the Taisho era (1912) and is located in Kotohira-cho, Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku, which is famous for the Kotohira-san shrine.

The history of the Kotohira dyeing shops (dyeing shops) began in the Tempo era (1830-1843) with Murakawaya, which was established in Kotohira-cho, and Takanoya, which was also established in Awa-cho. Mino-ya in Fujimi-cho had four large indigo vats in its workshop and employed many artisans. In addition, there were more than ten dye shops in the town of Konpira from the Taisho to Showa periods, and they would buy sukumo (fermented indigo leaves) from Awa (Tokushima Prefecture) and dye them standing up in vats. In the old days, the main thing was dyeing with indigo. It is said that the customers at the time were mainly farmers from the surrounding towns of Kotonami, Nakanami, Manno, and Zaita, who were transporting necessities such as vegetables and firewood to the town of Konpira.

Now, as time has passed, we are the only dyeing shop left in the area. We have received orders for a variety of work from all over Kagawa Prefecture and beyond, including banners for the Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Performance, happi coats for the Kotohira-cho parish festival, fishing banners, and shop curtains. This “Yoshino-ya Dye Shop”, which has been passed down from my great-grandfather, has now been passed down from the third generation to the fourth generation, after more than 100 years of operation.
